Abuser, Sadist – or Both?

Pathological narcissism, sadism, and psychopathy (a combination of both, typically) are aggressive defenses against both shame and envy, deeply concealed emotions directed at both others and the at good part-objects or the good self.

Sexual sadist: person who is sexually aroused exclusively by degrading and defiling a partner, whether consensually (in the majority of cases) or coercively. Sexual sadism is often autoerotic and the act culminates in masturbation, not in penetration.

Not all abusers are sadists.

Sadist’s pleasure principle gratified by torturing others even at the expense of the reality principle (adverse costs like self-denial, self-defeat, or even self-destruction).

So, sadist’s self-denial is not self-punitive or self-destructive, just appears to be.

Roles of paranoia (psychopathy) and grandiosity (narcissism).

Other people’s pain, humiliation, and discomfort are proof positive of his divine omnipotence and the locus of his grandiosity. It is an exhilarating apotheosis and elation.

He is cathected in the sense of godlike power experienced when he degrades and torments others.

Abuser is goal-oriented, even if the goal is a fantasy or a cognitive distortion (grandiosity).

Other people’s pain or discomfort are occasional byproducts, not a necessary condition. People can choose to avoid these adverse outcomes.

Mission accomplished is proof positive of perfection and the locus of grandiosity.

S/he is cathected in the sense of godlike power experienced when s/he attains the destination and secures the aims.
