Triggering is involved in both post-traumatic conditions and addictions.
In addictions, the trigger is irresistibly and compulsively desired (approach) and in trauma, it is avoided (avoidance).
Compulsions (e.g. sadism, pedophilia) as addictions and vice versa. Addicts learn to avoid triggers (aversive stimuli).
Approach-avoidant behavior is, therefore, a combination of addiction and a compulsive reaction to re-enacted trauma (revividness or emotionalized dysregulated memories).
Role of triggering in compulsions (ritualistic attempts to fend off post-traumatic aftereffects).
Trauma transmission via communicated triggers: victims acquire same triggers and may pass them on.
