The charming narcissist is libidinal and bigger than life, an exaggerated, caricatured human.
The contemptuous narcissist is dead inside and outside, a veritable corpse or machine. There are no stirring, eddies, or echoes of humanity.
Reactions to one’s monstrosity:
Self-justifying narratives:
Benevolent altruism (tough love): prosocial reframing
Necessary corrective measures (to avoid adverse outcomes or for the greater good or to punish an evildoer monster)
As a reactive survival strategy, a defense against abuse and exploitation (victim stance)
As justified punishment or retribution
As common behavior and a sign of honesty and forthrightness (no hypocrisy)
