Technologies like genetic engineering could dramatically change aspects of human civilization. We need to make sure they are used ethically, and with the greater good in mind. This requires public science literacy. Because some people will try to use it unethically, and they will rely on propaganda campaigns to deceive the public into thinking they're being ethical. So we have to understand science in order to see through that propaganda.
