Analyzing Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow using Victim Risk Continuum | Profiling Evil

This “Profiling Evil Insights” is going to focus on the Victim Risk Continuum, a tool utilized by some of the best investigators in the world to get a quick glimpse into the victimology (study of the victim) and the level of risk they assumed at the time of the crime. When you’re done listening, you’ll be able to start thinking about any criminal case with a little more insight into who the offender might be.

Statistically, “high-risk” victims such as transients, drug dealers or sex trade workers are usually victimized by strangers. And, while the predator is not known by the victim, they may have had opportunity to meet in the past, such as through drug transactions or sex-for-hire encounters. In most cases, the victims of these perpetrators are considered, “opportunistic victims.” They simply happen to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

When a “Low-Risk” victim is selected, the suspect in the case is generally known to the victim, or the predator knows the victim though other means. A good example of this might be the Elizabeth Smart case. Elizabeth didn’t necessarily know her abductor and abuser, Brian David Mitchell. Mitchell, a transient, had done some work around the Smart home and may have even returned to the home after dark, peering through their windows and fantasizing about Elizabeth, long before the abduction occurred. Thus, while unknown to her, she was certainly known in his mind. Low-risk victims are targets of the aggression against them. Again, they are somehow “known” to each other.

As with any triage technique, the “Victim Risk Continuum” has a number of influencing factors associated with it. In this case, they are;
