Today: An estimated 4.4% of adults (1 in 22) have bipolar disorder. Outcomes are often worse, with only 1/3 returning to work and cognitive decline being a concern.

Dr. McFillin suggests the expansion of diagnostic criteria in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) is a factor.
