Jessica Tarlov and Aaron Parnas (@aaronparnas1) break down a packed and alarming news day, starting with the collapse of the Iran-U.S. ceasefire. Oil prices have spiked to their highest level in weeks, and the IMF is now warning of a sharp global economic slowdown.
At the NATO Summit in Turkey, Trump called European allies "hopeless," seemed to confuse Zelensky with Putin, and made eyebrow-raising remarks about Japan. He did, however, announce that the U.S. will allow Ukraine to manufacture the Patriot air defense system domestically — a significant development in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Back home, the clock is ticking on the Maine Senate race. Bernie Sanders has now personally called Graham Platner urging him to step aside following sexual assault allegations, and Democratic pressure is intensifying. They talk about who could replace him, and what the Texas race is looking like.
Several Republican leaders say they spoke with the hospitalized Kentucky senator Mitch McConnell yesterday, and Governor Andy Beshear has sent a formal letter to McConnell's office requesting a health update.
Plus: The Justice Department has sent letters to election officials in all 50 states and D.C. threatening prosecution for failing to purge non-citizens from voter rolls. And the Trump administration has also been quietly rolling back gun violence prevention programs across the CDC, DHS, and DOJ.
Finally, the preliminary hearing in the Charlie Kirk murder case is underway in Utah, with prosecutors claiming a mountain of evidence against alleged assassin Tyler Robinson and seeking the death penalty.
