In today’s episode, we have Dr. Guru N Reddy, Founder & Chairman of Continental Hospitals. With decades of experience in healthcare across India and the US, he gives an inside look into the business of hospitals, the reality of billing practices, and how patients are often charged far beyond what’s necessary. He also shares his perspective on how India’s healthcare system compares with the corporatised model of America.

We talk about how hospitals inflate a ₹5,000 bill into ₹50,000, the unnecessary tests often prescribed, and whether patients are judged based on their appearance or insurance status. Dr. Reddy explains the difference between inpatient and outpatient rates, why medicines and tests are more expensive inside hospitals, and how health insurance changes the dynamics. He also opens up about the challenges hospitals face, the lack of infrastructure, and the black market of organs.

In the last segment, he discusses what it really takes to start and run a hospital, from capital per bed and land costs to annual working expenses, and reveals where hospitals actually make money versus where they incur the most losses.
