Artificial intelligence may become one of the most transformative technologies in human history—but could it also become one of humanity’s greatest threats?
As AI systems become more powerful, concerns are growing about autonomous weapons, mass surveillance, misinformation, job displacement, human dependence on machines, and even the possibility of artificial intelligence developing capabilities that humanity can no longer effectively control.
But from an Islamic perspective, there is an even deeper question:
Is AI itself the greatest danger—or is the real danger human beings possessing unprecedented technological power without the moral guidance necessary to use it responsibly?
In this discussion, we examine the rise of artificial intelligence through the guidance of the Qur’an and the Islamic understanding of human nature, knowledge, power, responsibility, and civilization.
The Qur’an presents the human being as a creature capable of tremendous knowledge and creativity, but also warns repeatedly against arrogance, corruption, oppression, and the misuse of power. Technology can magnify human ability—but it can also magnify human greed, violence, injustice, and the desire for domination.
Artificial intelligence therefore forces Muslims to confront profound questions about the human future:
What separates human intelligence from artificial intelligence? What happens when machines begin performing tasks once thought unique to human beings? Should every technology that humanity is capable of creating actually be created? And can technological progress save a civilization experiencing moral and spiritual decline?
The future of AI cannot simply be a conversation for engineers, corporations, governments, and Silicon Valley.
Muslims must enter this conversation with the Qur’an.
Because perhaps the greatest question of the AI age is not whether machines will become more like human beings—but whether human beings will remember what it means to be human.
