In 2007, Sean Hannity sat Christopher Hitchens down in "the hot seat" to put 'God Is Not Great' on trial. By the end, it was Hannity in the dock.
Hannity's case is a barrage of bad arguments - a faith equivocation, a Big Bang he's plainly never read about, an appeal to incredulity, a quiet shift of the burden of proof. Basically, a Gish Gallop dense enough that we end up calling fallacy bingo. And it earns him one of the most famous Hitchslaps ever recorded: "You give me the awful impression of someone who hasn't read any of the arguments against your position ever."
Every compilation plays that line as a put-down. It isn't an insult — it's a claim, a specific and checkable claim, and the moment Hitchens says it, the whole interview becomes a test of whether it's true.
Hannity fails it immediately. Asked, in effect, to show his working, he self-certifies without offering a single example. From there, he retreats: to mystery, to "you seem angry with God," to "religion does good things," and finally to restating "there is a God" as though saying it louder makes it land.
What makes it worth a full breakdown is the method. Most of us would start refuting each other's claims and end up looking like two people equally certain about opposite things. Hitchens goes one level up and tests the posture: have you actually read the case against your own view? Make him show his working, and when he can't, the confidence becomes the tell. Confidence was never evidence of competence.
