On Justin Brierley's Uncommon Ground, Alex O'Connor sits across from Anglican minister Glen Scrivener to debate whether Christianity gave us Western values. Glen's whole thesis rests on one very specific, very checkable claim: that slavery could only have ended because of Christianity. It's the argument of his book The Air We Breathe — and for most of this exchange, he does everything except actually defend it.
When he finally reaches for his best evidence, it's the Slave Bible: a redacted scripture given to enslaved people, offered as proof that slaveholders were terrified of what the real text said. Alex takes it apart and turns it into evidence for the opposite conclusion.
Steve breaks down the whole exchange — the meta-ethics trap Glen opens with, the 1794 abolition he can't quite own, the medieval history that never happened, and the moment the entire debate comes down to two words: which verse?
It's a clean demonstration of what to do when a sweeping, unfalsifiable claim floats above every counterexample you throw at it: stop arguing up there, and force it down onto a page you can actually check.
