Israel vs The Resistance: Waiting for retaliation is part of the punishment

At the end of July 2024, Israel assassinated Hezbollah's top military commander, Fuad Shukr, in Beirut.

Hours later, the leader of Hamas's political wing, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated in Tehran.

Although Israel did not acknowledge that it was behind Haniyeh's killing, Israel is widely believed to have killed him.

Both Hezbollah and Iran promptly vowed to retaliate severely for the killings of Skukr and Haniyeh. So far, however, neither of them has launched a major attack on Israel.

In the interim, Israelis wait nervously for their response.

On August 12, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Iranian professor Mohammad Marandi about the form and timing of the resistance's retaliation. They also discussed whether the U.S. was likely to attack Iran directly, the possible reaction of Russia and China to any such attack, and the considerable damage that the conflict is inflicting upon Israel's economy.
