YouTube Description
as posted by the channelSince Israel’s genocide in Gaza began last year, defenders of Palestinian human rights have experienced levels of repression not seen since the era of McCarthyism. One of the most notorious cases is that of Dr. Yipeng Ge.
In November of last year, Dr. Ge was suspended from the University of Ottawa. At the time of his suspension, Dr. Ge had been a fourth-year public health and preventive medicine resident and was completing a residency at the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Dr. Ge's suspension was precipitated by Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Ottawa. On his Substack page, Freedhoff drew attention to a number of Ge's social media posts about Palestine, which he falsely characterized as ‘antisemitic’. Freedhoff routinely posts pro-Israel content on social media, including statements issued by Israel's genocidal military. Freedhoff continues to post pro-Israel content even after a UN Commission of Inquiry found that Israel has deliberately destroyed Gaza's medical system.
After an online petition calling for Dr. Ge’s reinstatment garnered more than 100,000 signatures, Dr. Ge was reinstated by the University of Ottawa, but he refused to return there. He then travelled to Gaza with a team of Canadian doctors. He spent several weeks in Gaza treating Palestinians in need of medical treatment.
Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Dr. Ge on November 12, 2024 about his experiences in Gaza and his reasons for refusing to return to the University of Ottawa.
