53:31Now PlayingOn December 8, 2024, fighters of HTS, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, seized the Syrian capital of Damascus. On that same day, Russia announced that Syria’s former president Bashar Al-Assad had fled to Russia.
Since then, Israel has bombed Syria relentlessly. Its ground forces have penetrated further into Syria and are moving from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights toward Damascus.
In addition, there's now fighting in the northeast of Syria between Turkish-backed forces and Kurdish forces. 100,000 Syrians have been displaced internally by that fighting.
As Syria descends into chaos, Israeli media report that U.S. and Israeli intelligence are increasingly concerned about Iran's next move. Will Iran react to the destruction of Syria by developing a nuclear weapon?
To examine these developments, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Matthew Hoh. Matthew has twelve years of experience with U.S. wars overseas, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. State Department. He’s the Associate Director of the Eisenhower Media Network.
