Costas Lapavitsas is a professor of economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

In Greece’s January 2015 general election, he was elected to Greece’s Parliament as a member of the left-wing Syriza party. While serving as a Syriza MP, Lapavitsas witnessed first-hand how the EU elite destroyed Greece's economy and crushed Greek democracy.

Since then, the EU has fallen into an accelerating decline. Its financialized economy suffers from stagflation, its political elite has become increasingly authoritarian, and its proxy war in Ukraine has become a debacle of epic proportions.

Despite all this, can the European Union be saved?

In a conversation with Dimitri Lascaris, Professor Lapavitsas argues that the EU is irredeemable. To recover and sustain their prosperity, European states must reclaim their national sovereignty, democratize their economies and, under the direction of the state, make the massive investments that are necessary to improve their productivity.
