On April 28, Canada will hold its next federal election. The election was precipitated in late 2024 when Canada's deeply unpopular Liberal Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced his intention to resign.

In March 2025, Trudeau was replaced as Liberal Party leader and Canadian Prime Minister by former Goldman Sachs banker, Mark J. Carney. Carney does not have a seat in Canada's Parliament and has never held elected office. He wasted no time in calling an election.

Since Carney replaced Trudeau, there has been a massive shift in voter sentiment, with many voters who intended to vote Conservative, NDP or Green switching their votes to the governing Liberals.

On April 16 and 17, 2025, the leaders of the four largest political parties (the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP and Bloc Quebecois) held debates in the French and English language. Hours before the first of those debates, Canada's Electoral Debates Commission withdrew an invitation to Green Party of Canada co-leader, Jonathan Pedneault.

On the day following the leaders' English-language debate, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with author and activist Yves Engler and Green Party of Quebec leader Alex Tyrrell about the performance of the candidates in the leaders' debate. Most of their discussion focused on the foreign policies of the competing parties. As they explained, those policies are highly similar and are pro-war and pro-NATO.

Lascaris, Engler and Tyrrell also discussed the last-minute removal of the Green Party of Canada co-leader, the mess that the Green Party now finds itself in, and the downward trend in voter turnout in recent Canadian elections.
