Iran's Leaders Walk Among The People

While visiting the Iranian city of Esfahan, Dimitri Lascaris was given a tour of the city's historic centre (Imam Square) by the Governor of Esfahan Province. His name is Mehdi Jamalinejad.

Esfahan is Iran's second-largest city. It formerly served as Iran's capital and is renowned for its beauty and cultural treasures.

During the current U.S.-Israeli war of aggression on Iran, numerous historical sites, including structures designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, have suffered extensive damage.

Governor Jamalinejad has a Master's degree in city planning and is well qualified to oversee the city's restoration.

Despite Israel's ongoing 'decapitation' strikes targeting Iranian leaders and their families, Governor Jamalinejad walked with Dimitri and other journalists in broad daylight. He was not accompanied by bodyguards and he wore no protective gear. The Governor interacted freely and calmly with residents of Isfahan as he talked to Dimitri and other foreign journalists about Esfahan's history.

At the conclusion of the tour, Dimitri asked Governor Jamalinejad about the deadly protests that shook Iran in January of this year. He also asked the Governor about the right to protest in Iran, and the possibility of renewed negotiations between the Iranian and U.S. governments.

After spending more than one hour with the Governor, Dimitri and his fellow journalists strolled around Imam Square. As they did so, U.S.-Israeli forces struck a target near the square. Starting at 1:19:07 of this video, warplanes can be heard overheard, followed by a loud explosion. Despite the airstrike, the hundreds of people who were walking in the square remained calm and barely reacted. During the last five minutes of the video, dozens of women can be seen walking through the square with no head covering.
