Carlos the Jackal: Freedom Fighter, Revolutionary or Terrorist?

In the 1970s and 1980s, Carlos the Jackal was one of the most wanted fugitives in the world.

Among many other attacks, Carlos led the 1975 raid on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) headquarters in Vienna, during which three people were killed. He and five others demanded a plane and flew with a number of hostages to Libya.

Carlos, who's real name is Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, is a committed Marxist-Leninist and a lifelong defender of the Palestinian cause. For several years, he was associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

In 1993, Carlos was arrested in Sudan and flown to France. He was later convicted of multiple crimes and is currently serving three life sentences in France.

On a recent visit to Paris, R2R correspondent Rami Yahia interviewed Francis Vuillemin, the lawyer who defended Carlos. Rami and Maître Francis Vuillemin discussed the life and crimes of Carlos and the views Carlos holds today about the state of the world.

They also discussed the case of Maurice Papon, another infamous criminal whom Maître Vuillemin defended. Papon was a French civil servant during the Nazi occupation of France. In 1998, Papon was convicted of crimes against humanity by a French court. He was released from prison early, in 2002, for ill health. He died in 2007.
