Labour has paved the way for Gerry Adams and others accused of being IRA members to potentially claim “baseless” compensation for their detentions in the 1970s, according to a report.
In December, Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn discreetly announced proposed changes to legal provisions that prevent compensation for individuals interned without trial during the Troubles.
The Northern Ireland Office explained that the amendment aims to ensure the Northern Ireland Troubles Act—introduced by the Conservative government in 2023—complies with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
