The conversation took place during the first of two events hosted by South Carolina Democrats on Saturday Jan. 16, 2016, leading up the the 4th Democratic Primary Debate the following evening. The First in the South Dinner was a banquet and fundraiser at which all three major candidates spoke. Secretary Hillary Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Gov. Martin O'Malley also spoke at an event that followed a few miles away: the annual "Jim Clyburn's World Famous Fish Fry" held at the Charleston Visitor Center.
