But first, the Trump campaign pulled a bait and switch on the Washington press corp, luring dozens of reporters and cameras to a private campaign event with hints that he would, at last, acknowledge that President Barack Obama is an American citizen born in the United States.
He did do that, at the end of the morning event, but rather than making a statement and allowing reporters to ask questions, he sent up a procession of military veterans to say they support Donald Trump, and to imply that Trump supporters who believe in racist conspiracy theories were not the target of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's "basket of deplorables" jab, but rather veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Two hours after the secretive event was scheduled to begin, Trump stepped to the podium and issued a brief statement, then fled behind a curtain as reporters screamed questions like, "Why did it take you so long?"
