Voter Suppression in North Carolina, Will It Save Republicans?

An Election Eve update on voter suppression vs. election protection in North Carolina. Will it impact the results tomorrow? TYT's Eric Byler talks to Allison Riggs, Senior Attorney at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice in Durham, NC. Riggs is on the other end of the phone when North Carolina voters call the election protection hotline.

Riggs argued before the 4th District Federal Court against North Carolina's historic voter restriction bill passed in 2013, and was successful in getting the law struck down as unconstitutional because it targeted "with surgical precision" African American voters, as well as young people and the poor. Despite the ruling, North Carolina's voting restriction omnibus bill is having an impact, in part because the ruling came late in the summer. The US Supreme Court did not decide (in a 4 to 4 tie) to uphold the 4th Circuit Court's decision until August 31, and as a result, jurisdictions that had been planning for the reduced 10-day early voting period had to hurriedly expand to the previous 17-day period, and not without hiccups. Worse, some jurisdictions seemed to purposely leave urban and African American ares without sufficient early voting polling locations. And, official tallies show that African American turnout is down, perhaps partly as a result.
