Poll numbers for defeated Governor Pat McCrory (R) never recovered the Moral Monday movement dramatized and exposed extreme policies he had signed, such as tax breaks for the wealthiest 27 families in the state, tax increases on the middle class, cuts to education, a refusal to expand Medicaid or accept federal dollars for unemployment benefits and, perhaps most famously, unconstitutional and discriminatory voting restrictions.

McCrory lost in November of 2016 to Democrat Roy Cooper, even as "Trumpism" swept the South and other white-dominated areas of the country. Many point to Rev. Dr. William Barber's multiracial coalition building as the best weapon available to stand up to and defeat "Trumpism." In his introductory speech to the "Moral March on Raleigh" on Feb. 11, 2017, Rev. Barber seems to agree.
