Scott Smith, Chief Technology Officer & Investigator for Water Defense.org traveled to northwestern Indiana and the industrial town of East Chicago to investigate potential water contamination in the home of Maritza Lopez, a 53-year-old life-long resident.

In the summer of 2016, residents learned that the soil was poisoning their children, but that the water was safe to drink. Now, it appears the water is unsafe also. Forty-five years ago, thousands of homes were built on the former site of a lead smelting plant.

A lead contamination tragedy that has been poisoning Indiana families for 45 years. The West Calumet Complex located in East Chicago, IN is being evacuated and demolished after the EPA found astronomical lead levels and released its findings to the town's first African American mayor, Anthony Copeland. Why did the federal, state, and local government sign off on building 340 low income housing units on the former site of 3 defunct lead factories? And, more importantly, who is going to step up to take care of these families, many of whom have small children with health issues due to lead and arsenic poisoning, now forced to find a new place to live?
