Scott Smith, Chief Technology Officer & Investigator for Water Defense.org gives water test results to three residents in East Chicago, Indiana. In previous weeks, Scott thoroughly tested multiple homes for water contamination, after residents learned that the soil contained poisonous levels of lead.
The tests revealed dangerous levels of lead, bacteria (Pseudomonas Monteilii), chemicals (Chloroform, Trihalomethanes, & bromodichloromethane) and opportunities pathogens (Sphingomonas) that could be contributing to many of the health issues that resident Maritza Lopez is experiencing.

A lead contamination tragedy that has been poisoning Indiana families for 45 years. The West Calumet Complex located in East Chicago, IN is being evacuated and demolished after the EPA found astronomical lead levels and released its findings to the town's first African American mayor, Anthony Copeland. Why did the federal, state, and local government sign off on building 340 low income housing units on the former site of 3 defunct lead factories? And, more importantly, who is going to step up to take care of these families, many of whom have small children with health issues due to lead and arsenic poisoning, now forced to find a new place to live?
