4:25Now PlayingJohn Robson of TheRebel.Media reports, on October 22, 1899, advance copies of an obscure book by an obscure Viennese doctor made an immediate lack of impact.
But by the 1920s, everyone had heard of Sigmund Freud and his Interpretation of Dreams.
Freud’s work is messy and unscientific but to an era disillusioned by World War I it seemed to offer welcome proof that truth was an illusion, values relative, free will an illusion and primal urges the only approximation of reality available to human beings.
It helped make the 20th century the Age of Relativism and we’re not out of the woods yet.
