Sheila Gunn Reid of TheRebel.Media reports:
Rachel Notley isn't writing mandate letters for her ministers.
Mandate letters layout the responsibilities of the province's top politicians and the goals and expectations for their time in the portfolio. In normal years, that meant the energy minister may have a written explicit mandate of collaboration with other jurisdictions to get our resources to market. It's painfully obvious, Marg McCuaig-Boyd, the energy minister doesn’t have one of those.
Mandate letters are something that has been done by every Premier since Klein in Alberta.
Even federally, Trudeau has spelled out his ministers’ responsibilities in mandate letters.
Rachel Notley's spokesperson, Cheryl Oates, said the government feels they don’t need mandate letters because, “The priorities of the government are clearly outlined in the platform we put forward during the election; they’re clearly outlined, for example, in the throne speech we did and in the budget."
This rag tag bunch of baristas, social workers and professional activists make up the most inept and under-qualified government Alberta has ever had. We know many didn’t expect to be elected. If anyone is in need of direction and directives set out before them it's this accidental group of social justice warriors drunk on power. I mean let's be real. A lot of these accidental MLAs aren't that far removed from their mom leaving them a list of chores on the fridge so they can earn their allowance.
But this is Rachel Notley. She does this. She likes to shrug off tradition, often for no other good reason than because she can. And that’s a terrible way to govern. It's not the accountability and openness she promised us.
