Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began his remarks at the service with an audible sigh followed by the Arabic greeting, “As-salamu alaykum.” He then told Muslims that they remained welcome in Canada.
Trudeau was joined by Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard and federal opposition leaders on stage with a program that included several Muslim prayers.
In the wake of the terrorist attack, pundits and politicians have rushed to social media to label the accused a right wing extremist, pointing to “likes” on Alexandre Bissonnette’s Facebook page, which includes President Donald J. Trump and French politician Marine Le Pen.
