Collective ritual shows up in every human society, and it’s often expensive, exhausting, painful, or time-consuming. From a simplistic evolutionary perspective, it is difficult to envision why humans started doing these behaviors. Scholars Martin Lang and Radek Kundt argue it evolved out of three older signaling behaviors. This video follows those pieces back through human evolution.
