South African President F.W.de Klerk signed away the last major apartheid laws on June 27, 1990, ratifying bills that ended legal racial segregation.He said it was an important step.
Laws repealed included the Group Areas and Land Acts, which segregated residential areas and limited black land ownership; and the Population Registration Act, which classified citizens by race.
But until there is a new constitution, racial classification will continue.De Klerk also signed a law making it more difficult for security forces to detain people indefinitely without charges.
Apartheid led to relative international isolation for South Africa.De Klerk hopes this will now end and United States and European Community sanctions will be lifted.
