Bangladesh was previously known as East Pakistan, which was itself one of two parts of the country of Pakistan.
Pakistan legally came into existence at midnight on the eve of August 14, 1947, when British India was divided into two independent dominions -- the Muslim state of Pakistan and the Hindu-majority but nominally secular India. The partition displaced over 14 million people along religious lines.
