After the partition, the leader of the Muslim League Mohammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as the first Governor-General of Pakistan.
Louis Mountbatten, who was sworn in as first Governor-General of the Dominion of India, was the chief guest at the occasion, held in the newly-formed Pakistani capital of Karachi.
Shortly after, India and Pakistan went to war over the disputed border region of Kashmir, which ended with a U.N.-ordered ceasefire and resolution seeking a plebiscite for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide whether to become part
of India or Pakistan.
