SLATE INFORMATION: Captured by a German cruiser: thrilling adventure of a British Liner
SLATE INFORMATION: The Union Castle steamship "Galician", from Cape Town to Southampton, was, on Aug.15th, when off Teneriffe, signalled to stop by the German cruiser "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse"
SLATE INFORMATION: The "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse" had been transformed from a liner whilst at sea, six heavy guns & 24 machine guns being mounted

SLATE INFORMATION: Bearing down on the "Galician" at a speed of 24 knots, the cruiser signalled the liner to "heave-to". The marconi operator sent out the "S.O.S" distress signal & the cruiser ordered "Cease communication or we sink you."

SLATE INFORMATION: The German officers boarded the "Galician" & inspected the officers & crew. As all cameras were ordered below, the operator secured pictures under great difficult & at considerable risk

SLATE INFORMATION: Prisoners of War. Lieut.J. Deane, 1st Batt.East Lancs. Regt. & Gunner C.Shurmer, Royal Garrison Artillery, coming home on furlough were captured as prisoners of war

SLATE INFORMATION: Having ordered the prisoners into the cutter & insisted upon the captain of the "Galician" following a course indicated, the officers rowed back to the cruiser

SLATE INFORMATION: All through the night the liner ws forced to steam south, out the British cruisers answering her early call for help were searching. The wireless calls were intercepted by the German cruiser, the liner was allowed to proceed & the cruiser ran away
