1. North Korea criticized ongoing military drills in South Korea and warned the new U.S. administration against "causing a stink" if it wants peace. The statement comes as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Japan discussing denuclearization. The White House says it reached out to N Korea and received no response.
2. Sweden, Portugal, Latvia and Slovenia joined other European Union states in suspending AstraZeneca COVID-19 shots over concerns of possible serious side-effects. So far, a handful of cases of bleeding, blood clots and low platelet counts have arisen. The World Health Organization said there was no proven link and is expected to issue a statement on continued use of the vaccine at the end of the day. Meanwhile, Moderna announced it is beginning vaccine trials for children.
3. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki says the Biden administration would support an effort by Donald Trump to urge Republicans to get vaccinated. A PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll released last week showed that about half of American men who identified themselves as Republicans said they had no plans to get the vaccine. No Trump statement has been released on the vaccine. Meanwhile, Biden tours the US to promote the COVID relief bill.
4. The House of Representatives will vote on two immigration bills that would provide a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented people in the United States, including farmworkers and younger immigrants known as "Dreamers." The vote comes amid a surge of migrants at the southern border. Republicans have dubbed the influx “Biden’s crisis."
5. The judge in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd during an arrest, said he was concerned that publicity generated by the city's $27 million settlement with Floyd's family could taint the jury pool. Chauvin's lawyer asked the judge to again weigh moving the trial to a different county. Judge Cahill said he would consider it. Watch the Derek Chauvin trial livestream
