1. Derek Chauvin asked a judge for a new trial, two weeks after he was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd.
2. Donald Trump launched a space on his website called “From the desk of Donald J. Trump,” where he can post messages that can be shared by others to Twitter and Facebook. The move comes a day before a decision from Facebook Inc’s oversight board on whether to uphold Trump’s indefinite suspension from the platform. Trump was barred from a slew of social media platforms following the deadly Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.
3. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said criticism by Liz Cheney of Trump's false election claim had become a distraction from party messaging against Democratic President Joe Biden, who defeated Trump in November and took office in January. Republicans in the House of Representatives are expected to try to remove Cheney from their party leadership for denouncing former President Trump’s false claim the election was stolen from him, sources say.
4. India accounted for nearly half the coronavirus cases reported worldwide last week, the World Health Organization said.
5. Myanmar's National Unity Government, set up by opponents of army rule, said it had formed a "people's defense force" to protect its supporters from military attacks and violence instigated by the junta.
