1. U.S President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, plan to travel to Surfside, Florida, site of the deadly condo collapse, to offer condolences to families of those killed and missing as the casualty toll climbed.

2. A heatwave that smashed all-time high temperature records in western Canada and the U.S. Northwest has left a rising death toll in its wake.

3. A haul of confiscated fireworks exploded as police in Los Angeles were trying to dispose of it safely, injuring 17 people including six civilians and damaging cars and buildings.

4. New vote tallies released on Wednesday in New York City's Democratic mayoral race showed Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams' lead narrowing considerably over his nearest rivals.

5. China's President Xi Jinping warned that foreign forces attempting to bully the nation will "get their heads bashed,” and hailed a "new world" created by its people as the ruling Communist Party marked the centenary of its founding.
