August 3, 2021: Jan. 6 riot officers, Delta variant, Biden’s 70% first-shot goal, Turkey, Sydney

1. The District of Columbia's police department said two more police officers who responded to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol have died by suicide, bringing to four the number of known suicides by officers who guarded the building that day.

2. The U.S. states of Florida and Louisiana were at or near their highest hospitalization numbers of the coronavirus pandemic on Monday, driven by the still-spreading Delta variant.

3. Nearly three out of four Americans above the age of 18, 70% of U.S. adults, have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

4. Firefighters using planes and helicopters, and locals with buckets of water, battled wildfires raging for a sixth day near southern resorts in drought-hit Turkey and the government faced fresh criticism of its handling of the disaster.

5. Australian authorities said they could ease a COVID-19 lockdown that demands Sydney's five million people stay home until the end of August if half the population is vaccinated, even as new infections linger near a 16-month high.
