Human rights officials and death penalty opponents are calling for the U.S. to halt the state of Alabama's first planned execution of a prisoner by nitrogen gas asphyxiation this month. Death Penalty Policy Project Director Robert Dunham said the method is slow, with veterinarians saying it could take up to seven minutes to die by breathing in nitrogen.
