0:47Now PlayingEighty years ago, in the dying days of World War Two in Europe, French women went to the polls for the very first time and Marcelle Abadie, now 105, was among them.
The right to vote was extended to French women in April 1944, through an order from the French interim government in exile, led by then-general and future president Charles de Gaulle.
The democratic milestone was reached later than in some other Western democracies, after over 150 years of activism by French women, ranging from advocates in the 1789 revolution to 1930s suffragists.
