0:27Now PlayingThe Sea-Watch 5 rescue ship helped 73 migrants in two different rescue operations carried out on August 11 in the Central Mediterranean.
The first rescue took place during the night, with six migrants saved from a boat in distress.
According to a press release issued by the NGO Sea Watch, after rescuing 67 people on an overcrowded boat in the second operation, a nine-month pregnant woman went into labour, requiring immediate medical intervention, "essential for the survival of the unborn child."
The woman was transported by helicopter to Italy.
According to UNHCR data, although arrivals by sea in Europe fell by 24% in 2024, reaching 200,000 people, the number of deaths and missing persons remained high.
UNHCR estimated that at least 3,500 people lost their lives or disappeared on the various sea routes to Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece and Cyprus in 2024.
