1:08Now PlayingFor 346 days, Ukrainian soldier Serhii Krynitskyi lived and fought from a hand-dug underground shelter on the deadliest edge of the frontline, known as the "kill zone," near Chasiv Yar. He kept a video diary, documenting his struggle to survive while being hunted by enemy drones. Both the comrades he was stationed with were killed defending the position. Cut off from his brigade and resupplied only by drone, Serhii endured winters in a dugout he said he wasn't sure to call "a shelter, or a grave."
Serhii's video diary was shared with Reuters by his unit, the 24th Mechanised Brigade.
Reuters could not independently verify all aspects of Serhii Krynitskyi's account.
Russia's defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment about the changing nature of the battlefield and the experiences of soldiers on both sides.
