Thomas Edison launched the Electric Age in 1882 with his central power plant in Lower Manhattan. But it was Frank Sprague’s perfection of the electric elevator at the Postal Telegraph Building at 253 Broadway in 1894 that enabled skyscrapers and made New York into one of the world’s most vertical cities.
