5:53Now Playing2018 Freedom Award honoree Pitt Hyde has been involved in the civil rights movement for decades and was thrust into the front lines after taking over his family business in Memphis in 1968.
After a meeting with Dr. Maxine Smith who was the Executive Secretary of the Memphis Branch of the NAACP at the time, Hyde began to work with civil rights leaders in the area.
Hyde who is the trustee of the Hyde Family Foundation and founder of AutoZone is also a supporter of education reform. He told Roland Martin a "quality education" is essential for moving Memphis forward.
He later added, when children are "put in the right classroom with the right teachers they can be put on a totally different path ... that is the critical underpinning to ultimately solve poverty in our community."
