9:10Now PlayingExclusive investigative data from the Greenville News shows that in South Carolina, civil forfeiture targets Black people’s money more than any other ethnic group.
According to the Greenville News, Black men pay a high price for civil asset forfeiture. Despite representing 13 percent of the state's population, Black men make up 65 percent of all citizens targeted for civil forfeiture in South Carolina.
To make matters even worse, nearly onefifth of people who had their assets seized weren't charged with a related crime. Approximately 40% of the people whose cash or possessions were was seized by law enforcement were never convicted of a crime. []
Mike Ellis, an investigative reporter for the Greenville News spoke with Roland Martin about how South Carolina police and targeting African Americans and taking their possessions.
