5:28Now PlayingGroundbreaking film director, screenwriter and producer John Singleton has passed away after suffering a stroke on April 17th.
Early on Monday, Singleton's family decided to remove him from life support at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he had been in ICU since suffering a massive stroke.
John Singleton, who ws 51 years old, was a father of 5 children. graduate of USC Film School and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Singleton left a major mark on the film industry with "Boyz N the Hood" in 1991. He was nominated for an Academy Award for director and Best Original Screenplay. He was the first African American and youngest ever to be nominated for best director. The film which was preserved in the National Film Registry, starred Cuba Gooding, Jr., Angela Bassett, Ice Cube, and Laurence Fishburne.
Some of Singleton's other cinematic works include: "Poetic Justice", 1993. "Higher Learning", 1995. "Rosewood", 1997. "Shaft", 2000. "Baby Boy", 2001. "2 Fast, 2 Furious", 2003. "Four Brothers", 2005. "Hustle and Flow", 2005.
The famed director also touched the small screen with his genius, directing episodes of "Empire", and "American Crime Story" and was also the executive producer of Rebel on BET and was the creator of Snowfall on FX.
