4:30Now PlayingThe national NAACP released a letter on Thursday saying that the organization has suspended Rev. Curtis Gatewood, a candidate for president of the North Carolina chapter over sexual harassment accusations.
Jazmyne Childs came forward on Wednesday to reveal she was sexually harassed by Rev. Gatewood during a news conference.
An excerpt of the letter sent to Gatewood reads:
Dear Reverend Gatewood:
On September 11, 2019, the National Office received a formal Article X complaint seeking suspension of your NAACP membership because of alleged misconduct during your tenure as Executive Director of the North Carolina State Conference. The Article X complaint contains credible allegations that you engaged in sexually harassing behavior towards another State Conference employee during 2017. As an organization dedicated for 110 years to principles of equality of rights for all persons, the NAACP takes all allegations of sexual harassment very seriously. We do not condone such behavior nor do we protect those who engage in such behavior. Because you are currently a candidate for President of the North Carolina State Conference, the potential harm to the Association and the State Conference from the alleged misconduct is apparent. Under Article X, Section 5.i of the NAACP Constitution, “[w]here a complaint has been filed and the President and CEO is satisfied that there is a danger of harm to the Association or Unit involved and that action is necessary, he may order any officer of a Unit or member of an NAACP Unit suspended pending a full hearing.” (Emphasis added). Upon reviewing the allegations in the recently-filed Article X complaint, I am satisfied that your continued membership in the Association presents a danger of harm to the NAACP and the North Carolina State Conference and that action is necessary to prevent or mitigate that harm. Accordingly, I hereby suspend your membership in the Association, effectively immediately, pending investigation and a full hearing (if you so request) regarding the allegations contained in the above-referenced Article X complaint.
