17:14Now PlayingAt one time, farming was a lucrative business for black farmers. But, they were stripped of tens of thousands of acres because of racist policies. Today, most rural land in the United States is owned by white people.
Senator Cory Booker introduced new legislation that could help African Americans reclaim some of that land.
The Justice for Black Farmers Act would allow Black farmers to reclaim up to 160 acres each, at no charge, through a Department of Agriculture system of land grants.
John Boyd, Founder of the National Black Farmers Association spoke with Roland Martin about the potential of The Justice for Black Act, how the USDA discriminated against Black farmers and explained what the Biden/Harris administration can do to rectify the wrongs done to African American farmers.
Boyd also discussed who President-elect Joe Biden should pick to head the USDA.
