The researchers say the variant came from European diplomats visiting Botswana.
Omicron is spreading at a rapid rate.
Vaccine inequity allows wealthier nations to give booster shots while poorer nations have millions of citizens who do not have their primary dose of the vaccine.
In Africa, only 6 percent of the 1.2 billion person population is vaccinated.
In comparison to the rest of the world where 70 percent of countries have 40 or more percent of their populations vaccinated.
Lack of healthcare workers and facilities, education, funding, and vaccine hesitancy is driving the divide in vaccine equity.
There are also several travel bans on African countries that African leaders say are unnecessary and negatively affect economies.
Worldwide, there are more than 272 million cases and over 5 million deaths.
On Thursday, Roland spoke with Onkokame Kitso Mokaila, Botswana's Ambassador to the United States about the COVID pandemic, travel ban issued and what his country is doing to stem the tide against the Omicron variant.
