3:32Now PlayingIllinois homeowners can finally get racist language removed from their property deeds.
A new law went into effect on January 1st, allowing homeowners with discriminatory language in their deeds to file a restrictive covenant modification for ten dollars with the State's Attorney.
The State's Attorney will then have 30 days to review the claim, approve and file the modification to the deed. The request can be denied.
In the 1948 Shelley v. Kraemer case, the U.S. Supreme Court found restrictive covenants in property deeds that prohibited property sale to people of color violated the 14th Amendment.
