37-year-old Landon Eastep was sitting on a guard rail along interstate 65 Thursday afternoon. When a state trooper approached him, Eastep became agitated.
Police tried to de-escalate the situation for more than 30 minutes, but then the suspect pulled a silver object out of his pocket.
Thinking it was a gun, nine officers opened fire, including members of Nashville metro police and the highway patrol.
That silver object turned out to be a boxcutter.
